Microsoft Throws Weight Behind Gaming on Windows  by Craig D at 23:22

PC
Shacknews have a very interesting report from the currently running Gamefest event in Seattle, it's based on a presentation given today by Skip McIlvaine from Microsoft. It outlines Microsoft's plans to revitalise gaming on the windows platform. It's recommended reading, even for just the numbers involved.

According to Microsoft, the actual total Windows gaming market is growing, in large part due to the rise of online casual gaming. Currently, Microsoft estimates that there are 16 million hardcore online PC gamers, 39 million moderate online PC gamers, and a staggering 143 million casual online PC gamers. The overall market is expected to hit 336 million online gamers in 2009

That's a lot of people. If Microsoft can pull it off and I see no reason why develpers and publishers won't want them to, the future of PC gaming is indeed bright.

I don't see how it's a bright future. They may be gamers but that may just mean they're still playing old games on crap PC's. The market for up-to-date games are so much smaller. If you see what I mean.

Well the sooner people liven up to the fact the PC will never die the better!
Kicks the ass out of Xbox360 and PS3 noobs who have to pay for extra maps, and to play online.

anyone who says PCs will die out is deluded, a PC is just a Computer for personal use, so in a sense a 360 is a Personal Computer as its for home use and processes data. PCs will merely evolve and be repackaged, thats all consoles are... repackaged more specific PCs.

Game dev's, need to start making games with staying power again, games that are updated regularly and the community isnt left wondering about the next patch.

Also the modding community needs more support from game dev's. i mean PTR is bloody awesome but evey time EA patches BF2 the PTR guys have to work their socks off for days. when in actuallity it would take EA all of about an hour of one persons time to keep the modders updated.

They also need to optomise games again, i give u call of jauz as a point, and they need to not kill the community i.e EA bf2. And bogie you say 360 uses pay for extra maps, yes some maps you have to buy but a fair few you dont, but u seem to forget bf2 you have to buy the maps, oblivion you have to buy new missions and maps, its the same on both formats, except on pc you can make your own.

Agreed Stan, and let's be honest. We paid like £7 for about 8 new maps and about 6 new guns in GRAW on the 360. I'd rather pay that than buy the shoddy 3 map deal with BF2 again.

PC fanboy much? Gaming isn't just about online. There are also games on the PC which require money to be played online. At least 360 owners just have to pay one company and not multiple companies for multiple games. Depending on your taste in games, online can be just as good on a console then it is on a PC. The sooner you get over PC games mainly being half arsed efforts the better ;D
