Battlefield 2142 Officially Announced and Screenshots  by Craig D at 13:10

PC
Here's the official Battlefield 2142 product announcement and the first four BF2142 screenshots too. As expected, Battlefield 2142 will ship this autumn.

All-new Title from the Award-winning Battlefield Franchise to be set in the Future

CHERTSEY, UK – March 22, 2006 – Fight an all-out war for survival in the year 2142. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Sweden-based developer, Digital Illusions, today announced development of the next installment in the award-winning BattlefieldTM franchise, Battlefield 2142TM. The highly anticipated first-person shooter is scheduled to ship worldwide this winter for the PC.

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth's population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

"Battlefield has long been synonymous with innovative, best-of-breed online multiplayer action," said Sean Decker, Executive Producer, DICE. "By stepping into the future with Battlefield 2142, the team at DICE has reinvented the rules of engagement for the next century."
Team play features allow up to 64 players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With in-game success, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals and more, delivering the most comprehensive and flexible persistence in the Battlefield universe to date.

This looks interesting. I wonder how the opposing force/s look/s like and what are the vehicle and weapon configs.

tbh it looks like this is going to turn into another fifa with a new version every year which is a pity as it will kill the game tbh.

I'm pretty sure there's a free mod that covers all the vehicles that are in this game.

I won't pass judgement on 2142, either. I WILL pass judgement on EA, though. It's just too soon to release a new BF game. BF2 has only been out for NINE MONTHS! Now EA wants to release the next game only 18 months after BF2? It's just a profit scheme that, in the end, will hurt gamers' experience with the BF series. I'd rather EA fix BF2 COMPETELY before announcing the next BetaField game.

For some reason, I can't see it doing to well? People tend to like more realistic settings- hence BF1942 and BF2.. I'm not going to say it's going to suck or anything; I'm sure it will sell well, but I can't see it being as good as a game as its predecessors.

I'd have to agree, people like weapons and vehicles they can relate to, hence the success of counter-strike/bf2/cod/cod2

I think:
1. It looks pap (I agree with grant saying it looks like C&C rip off)
2. It looks like a mod (Hardly any graphical improvement)
3. It looks bland
4. People can't relate to this
5. ITS TOO SOON, BF2 is still good, improve on that
6. Perhaps they should release this as an MMOFPS, not a rival to its (fairly) recently released game.
7. You can't keep a strong fanbase like Counter-Noobs by releasing lots of sequels
