Sony To Crackdown On Importing Playstation 3  by James B at 13:31

Playstation
If you're a hardcore PS3 fan and were planning to import the pricey console next month, then I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. The BBC are reporting that Sony has threatened to crackdown hard on grey importing of its new console, claiming they are protecting Europeans from "being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards." The slated release date for the PS3 in Europe is not until March 2007, almost 5 months after it retails to US and Japan.

Europe, shafted again.

Don't want one anyway, it'll be the same as the 360, lack of good games for ages.

Sony are not getting my money. I would rather spend it on a more mature 360 with a HD drive.

I am getting really sick of buying something and being treated like I rent it or dont own it. The same can be said of importing stuff, since when can sony tell me what I can and can't buy.

"being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards.

So basically the Jap consoles are not as safe as the european ones. More likely to blow up in your face huh?

You'd have to buy a step-down to be able to use an imported console so yeah, you can end up blowing the step-down or the console. I don't blame them for this really, alot of importing people end up blowing their hardware so I don't really blame Sony for not wanting to deal with all that shit. Still, it sucks... and it's easier to slate them rather then to think about it more </sarcasm>

I swear, nower days it's easier to get drugs/guns/sword into the country then SF3:Third strike or ****ing gaming hardware!

Yes but alot of people don't. Which is why alot of import site beg you to read the FAQ before ordering. Of course it's your own fault if you blow it, but I don't blame Sony for trying to stop it. Anyway, health and safety is health and safety.

All I'm saying is, don't be so quick to judge them ^_^

It's a perfectly valid reason...

Then maybe they should sell step downs or explain it, instead of just trying to stop people from importing stuff. Some people are idiots and blow stuff up, people put metal in the microwave quite offten no matter how much we tell them. I am sorry but in my view trying to stop people importing your product is a piss take, and lets be honest they dont care about damaged consoles they just want more cash and the ability to charge you more for a game when it comes out a year later.

I don't believe it is tbh. Anyway, as I said earlier, it's all down to games and perhaps one more thing. The 360 is a noisy SoB, if the PS3 is quiet AND has more games then it will continue Sony's domination.

Stan, people getting hurt, killing themselfs, or blowing consoles will make any company look bad.

Remember it's a CONSOLE not a PC. People who buy them are the every day game r, they're not experts. Sure, we look this stuff up but not everyone does, people can be fed false info or just plain **** it up.

Including a step-down in the package would be cheaper then making a different PSU for EU or Japan, so I don't see why this makes them money hungry...

Once they managed to do this tho, its a small step to then stop you importing games or films or whatever and most of my dvds are imported same for my 360 games.
