Ok guys need some advice. I'm just about to buy a HDTV. It's either going to be a Panasonic 37" Plasma or a Phillips 37" LCD. Now I'm thinking DVD players. HD DVD is out today and players are looking at being around $450. I think I'd rather wait. One thing I was considering was buying a 360 and using that for DVDs. Does it have HDMI out? And whats the DVD playback like on an HDTV?

Thanks in advance for you're advice

You can't currently get an HDMI cable for the 360 but its ment to be coming - no dates though. Best you can do for now is components or VGA cables which would give you HD output. It doesnt upscale DVDs though. Like the HDMI cable, its ment to be possible but not implemented, bloomin MS.

ok first things first, DO NOT TOUCH A LCD TV, plasma wise pioneer are the best with panasonic viera coming second, the panasonic are alot cheaper as well. Currently the xbox360 doesnt come with a hi def dvd drive, plus using a console as a dvd player is just shite and should get u shot in the face.
I wouldnt buy a hi def dvd drive yet because of the 2 competing formats and which ever one u go for, u can garantee will be the one that doesnt get the support.
As you are in the states atm you can view hi def tv anyway.
Even a budget 60 quid pioneer dvd player will do a FAR better job at playing dvds than a console, if you are going to spend say 1500 quid on a panasonic viera then you really need to spend the cash and get a decent dvd player to go with it.

anyway Be carefull when u buy a hi def screen james, in the uk just cos it has a badge saying HD compatable, doesnt mean it can actually display 720p or 1080 it just means it has a hdmi or dvi input and thus can show the hi def but without any of the extra lines or detail. Its a bit of a fudge tbh m8, i dunn o how stuff is in the states though.

Ok they have poor colours, their responce times are no where near that of plasma, they dont have the detail of plasma, they have trouble with fast movement and life like colours, they suffer from horrid amounts of noise. They have massive trouble going over i think 37 inch's. They are ok for a tv in your kitchen on the counter but anyone who buys one for a main tv should be shot. The easiest way to describe it is this - A lcd reminds me of the quality of those old dodgy movies you use to get of a guy in the back of a cinema with a camcorder, where all the colours were wrong and horrid amount of detail and noise and with a pioneer plasma being say dvd. There is a HUGE difference between the 2, mind u most plasmas are a pile of shite bar pioneer and some panasonic ones.
All in all if you buy a lcd for your main tv you are the sort of person who likes their tv to look far better off than on.
I have no doubt that in a few years lcds will be great, as it took plasma a few years to get to where it is today. Just right now lcd is a pile of arse.

there are far more bad plasmas than good ones, so either go for the pioneer 436xde or make sure u demo lots and lots of them. I seriously would not recomend a lcd, before you go and demo the tvs let me know and i will tell you what are some good dvds to test the screen on. Dont go for a budget make though because they really are very poor you tend to get what you pay for.

Theres actually a normal samsung telly 32 inch which does HDTV think its only 720p though its by far the cheapest HDTV ive seen at £500. Not really relevant to Scrappy but might help someone out on a tight budget.
