Well having heard feck all about this film i decided to watch it at an early screening a few days ago with a m8 who's read the book!
and to say i knew nothing of the storyline would have been an understatement....
i went to the film expecting some guy with a jar shaped head to be running round doing crazy shit.... but i was plesantly suprised
For those of you who havent read the book, i recommend watching the film and reading the book! For those of you who have read the book, i recommend WATCHING the film
i wont go into any detail but if you liked Donny Darko, you'll love this film...

Jarhead (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows "Swoff" (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle and a hundred-pound ruck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully fathom... Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer who heads up Swofford's scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff's friend and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit.

aye i have to agree with bigbird the most reviews i have heard of jarhead said it isnt very good and lacks any real emotion. It looks nothing like donnie darko either, tottaly and utterly different with the only similarity being the actor. Different director as well, sam mendes the guy who done american beauty done jar head.

"...for a cause they don't fully fathom..."
I do hope I don't come off all blather and bluster (and God knows I can), but, as an "old" Marine with many many current contacts amongst the active duty fellowship of the USMC, I can tell you that there are VERY few Marines afflicted with a sense of confusion about their fidelity and purpose. Without a doubt there must be some, it's only human nature after all. But in my direct expierence, I know of none who question thier "cause". This is not to imply that the Marines Corp has dolts for members. Rather the reverse is true. Still, it was a moderatly good movie... Magicky
