If you've been into PC's for a while you'll remember most of these...

maybe not following on Mani's subject but I liked the title.

Tomorrow I'm taking my old pc it a dude who will hopefully tell me what is up with it - whats salvagable and what needs chucking, seeing as I just cant simply afford to buy/build a new one at the mo, I figure giving him £50 to look at it, is the cheapest way.

Just one question - Is Linux any good? I havn't a clue where my xp papers are and my validation code and the dude obviously aint gunna put a hooky version on there, So i was thinking I may aswell just ask him to put that on and use it as a OS.

is it worth the effort?

not unless you want to mess around with getting drivers to work and loads of command line bs. Linux is very fast and there are hundreds of different distributions of it but imo it's not worth having as a serious OS unless you're into messing with it constantly. Xp will cost you like £50 from www.aria.net

Either that or google for one of the many tools that tells you what key was used to instally our current XP installation and then just get it from that.

hmm, Linux. It's not for the average user tbh, if you can be bothered to learn stuff it can be fun and it is stable but you won't be playing many games on it.

yeah i suppose - I guess I put to much faith in my old man and his mate from work to figure it out.

What with the robbery and my holiday to mexico I've not really missed playing it that much. If anything it gave me a while away from BF2 to spend more time with the mrs - As i wasnt playing "My Silly Computer games!"

I look fwd to gettin back on line with a Pc I know is good enough to play some games - Orange Boxset here I come.

had a right feckin sh!tty weekend with my newly fixed pc - after updating my drivers wrong I believe ive fecked the mobo.

I cant seem to fix it in the bios and cant make my pc work on any other monitor than my dads shitty 15" it also wont boot in safe mode. this si what i see if i try to boot in safe mode - is the easiest way out for me - just buy another mobo - or do i have other options??

p.s I cant really afford to upgrade at this festive period of time so the cheaper the better.

thats exactally what it is - i used some driver cleaner pro - something like that, for the first time the other day.
I know i disabled something I shouldnt and now thats it..

If i get hold of another mobo and plug all my stuff into that - problem solved right?

or can i do something to my mobo at mo to get it working - any idea why it worked at my dads - but not mine?

can't you hold f8 and boot to a previously working backup if you've just changed a driver ?

If that fails and you cant get into safe mode in order to use System Restore then you might have to do a Windows repair with your original widows install disk.
