I always thought AVG and Zonealarm were the best freebie's.
But you can measure my technical expertise on a pin head.

BlackIce is a decent software firewall. McAffee is much better than Norton or AVG.

i've always seen mcafee to be sh!te as its well easy to bypass if you wish to hack through its firewall. Dunno what the antivirus is like tho :s I personally use Norton 2004 (need 2005) but tbh antivirus stuff and firewalls dont matter and won't be used a lot as long as you dont go on any dodgy sites. Although you do really need a firewall if your playing a lot of games online.

hate to break it to u jonnz, but firewalls are most definatly needed. I have seen people be hit by worms within 5 mins of going online. I cant see why anyone these days would go on the net without a firewall and av. its just asking for trouble ! I put him avg and some firewall i cant recall the name of.

Blaster connecting to TCP port 135 would be one example.

Much prefer hardware firewalls, buy a cheapish router is always my advice, you alos get the added advantage mutiple machines using the same connection.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Apparently Bit Defender do a free version. The pay version is supposed to be one of the best on the market. It shits all over Norton, McAfee and AVG.

Mmm must try Bit Defender though I use AGV for day to day & then trend housecall on any downloads as well as AGV . Firewall wise I use the router HW firewall with XP firewall as a backup.

mcafee home user version sucks wang the enterprise edition version 8.0i is the best av software going bar none. it also has no licensing/cd keys on install as it's mainly used by businesses and therefore all the licensing done on a trust basis. perhaps you can find a copy? :/ i've sold/supported pretty much every AV product out there and although a lot of other mcafee products suck the chubbeh this one really is good
