Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online officially launched today in North America, though we'll have to wait a few more days here in blighty. However there are now apparently over 1 million accounts registered on the official sites, quite how that translates into players with subscriptions we'll have to wait and see I suppose.

"Throughout the last four decades, Star Trek has been a mainstay in pop culture, influencing legions of 'trekkers’ through television, film, and more. We expect Star Trek Online to give fans and gamers an unprecedented Star Trek experience."

To celebrate the UK launch, Namco Bandai and Atari will be attempting to break a rather odd World Record. On Sunday February the 14th at 1pm in London, hey will attempt to set a record for 'largest gathering of people dressed as Star Trek characters’. The best dressed participants will win lifetime subscriptions worth over £150. Check out the Facebook event page for more details.
