id's Rage Announced  by Craig D at 16:40

PCXBoxPlaystation
Again at QuakeCon, id software announced the name of their next project, previously only known by the name of the engine, tech5.

Rage is a shooter as you might have hoped or indeed expected from an id project but would appear to feature many more outdoor areas and indeed car racing, boring Doom 3 style corridors are perhaps no more.

"Rage" will represent somewhat of a stylistic break by letting players roam expansive outdoor areas.

"In addition to the shooting elements and killing bad guys with cool guns -- everyone knows we can do that well -- we wanted to show off some stuff that would surprise people," Hollenshead said.

The graphics technology, or engine, underpinning "Rage" is also important since id makes one of a handful of such software packages that are licensed by other game makers.

Hollenshead said the new "tech5" engine would make it easier for developers to design games that are better looking and can be easily modified to run on different gaming systems, a process that normally takes months and pushes up costs.

"It allows a single studio team to make four versions of our game without outside help," Hollenshead said. "You can have massive outdoor environments and make them look glorious down to pixel level without any performance issues."

A lot of titles like this knocking about these days: "rey", "Doom", "Fear", "Rage". The industry must be running out of ideas by now.

I meant game names, btw, not the games themselves.

I think ID has lost the plot, Quakewars is looking to be a flop judging from the beta, Then this a dx9 game with the ye olde doom engine that was always rubbish, too dark with shiney things.
I read the whole thing an they reckon nobody likes dx10 or wants it, (crysis looks bad doesnt it..NOT) and that justifies them using a really old engine that was always poor.

SENT, you obviously haven't a clue what you're talking about. For starters Id software use the OPENGL API to make there stuff cross platform (no micropap DX9 or 10) .
Also , Id tech 5 Eliminates performance hit of textures no matter what there size.
So now we can have levels with truly unique textures on every surface with NO PERFORMANCE HIT
Thats what revolutionary about Id tech 5, that and the fact its scalable to every platform currently available(unlike crysis)
Throw on the amazing development tools and you have an engine and package which pisses over anything currently available.
I do agree with you on Quakewars but id tech 5 is way ahead of that, revolutionary and marks a huge milestone in game technology.
Dont diss what you obviously don't understand.
