Blizzard Calls New Consoles Sophisticated PCs   by James B at 00:17

GamesIndustry.biz are reporting that Blizzard exec Ben Bassat has dismissed consoles as becoming more and more like PCs - to the point that he forsees consoles as becoming redundant in five years time as we all run multimedia PCs to organise our lives and entertainment.

"Consoles are becoming sophisticated PCs which sit in the living room... We'll have to see how all this develops. Maybe in five years you won't need a console because you'll have one PC which delivers content all over your house."

With even the Wii offering internet browsing, are we seeing the death of consoles as a separate gaming-focused media platform?

I don't see consoles dieing, the great thing about a console is the hardware is allways the same. PC's require upgrades, which in turn means making games for the PC has to cater for so many variations. While no expert, im pretty sure developing a game for one hardware layout is alot easier than for X hardware variations on a PC

Well, even if that is true, the same concept is true for the consumers. The console is a one off fee gauranteed to run all the games made for it to full capacity

True, no need to upgrade for 5-8 years when you have a console
