Nintendo have announced that they plan to release an enhanced Wii in Japan with a DVD player. There are currently no plans to bring this model to US or Europe. Nintendo originally dropped DVD playback from the Wii in an effort to drive down production costs on the Wii.

Off the top of my head I can think of at least five devices in my house that can play DVDs, so I can't imagine this ever being an issue for me.
