Playstation 3 games: over $60, under $100?  by James B at 19:21

Playstation
1up.com have a very interesting brief article that contains some interview quotes from SCEA president Kaz Hirai. Mr Hirai comments on how a next-gen console will affect software prices.

In an interview with PSM, the Sony leader explained. So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say " PS3 games now $99.99" I don't think the consumers expect the software pricing to suddenly be double," he told the magazine. "So, if it becomes a bit higher than fifty-nine bucks don't ding me, but, again, as I said, I don't expect it to be a hundred bucks."

$60 USD is around £33, before tax shoots it up. So, cheaper than Xbox 360 games, but more expensive than PS2 ones - assuming it stays around $60. Mr Hirai doesn't seem to sure about that though...

In this day and age shouldn't software be getting cheaper?

At some point games prices need to come down, it's getting ridiculous in this day and age - games almost come to 1/4 or 1/3 of the price of a console.

They wont be 33, more likely 50 quid at least. But the console is nearly 600 so who cares, won't be buying one.

The console platform is all about making margin on the software but having said that the cost of producing a title today across any platform has risen considerably hence the high cost of buying leading edge games.

Some of these games cost ridiculous amounts to make though. I do agree though, the price difference for the same game across the consoles (eg. hitman, as Re0sLess points out) is bloody silly. I wonder what pricing would be like if the pricing on the various platforms was equalised across the board?
