PlayStation 3 users to have basic online services for free  by James B at 16:06

Playstation
GamesIndustry.biz have an article up that references a japanese interview with Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi. It seems to hint that PS3 users won't have to pay for online services.

In an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch, Kutaragi said: "You can't charge money for network matching and other basic services. These things are just taken for granted on the PC."

"On the PS3, basic services will be taken for granted while content will be the bread and butter of our business."

A very sensible idea which might take some of the sting out of the steep price tag on the console itself.

"while content will be the bread and butter of our business." - so why the £500 H/W price tag?
