PS3 Concerns Grow  by James W at 10:27

XBoxPlaystation
There is an interesting article published on MSNBC (written by Forbes.com) about how important the PS3 is to Sony and the concerns people have raised. As you'd expect it talks about the Xbox 360 as well.

But Sony's use of the Blu-Ray disc drive means even more is at stake for the company — Nintendo and Microsoft aren't including a high-definition player in their consoles (though Microsoft will offer an optional HD-DVD drive for sale before the year's end). The PS3 will cost Sony more to make, but the payoff in the future could be worth it.

Even the cheapest new Blu-Ray DVD players will retail for about $1,000. David Carey, president of electronics-component specialist firm Portelligent, says the Blu-Ray drive could add about $100 to the cost of owning a PS3.

I fully expect all 3 systems to sell well enough, bu the blu-ray drive will only help sony if blu-ray wins the format wars, I currently expect players that support both hd-dvd and blu-ray will be the ones that people buy. Just the same as the dvd+r and dvd-r format wars of a few years back, they both won.

i can't see blu-ray not winning, well at least lasting a god few years, i mean there are drive in production and HD-DVD isn't anywhere near that close to production.

also even if the format doesn't make mainstreem sony will still back it, i mean betamax went on to become video8, MD is big in the us and japan as is ATRAC, SACD is still in production even though the end user number is probably very small. Sony don't care about other ppl, they do what they like and they r big enough to get away with it.

HD-DVD is as close to full production as Blu-ray if not closer last I heard.

Yeah i seem to remember HD-DVD drives getting demoed ... probably fairly similar stages of development. Hard to say which would be better, though HD-DVD is ment to be cheaper and still has the potential to hold a lot but Blu-Ray will get a lot of market just from the PS3.
