Blu Ray On The 360 - Never Says MS  by James W at 11:29

XBox
There have been numerous news reports recently saying how the Xbox 360 is ready to support an external Blu Ray drive should it win over the HD-DVD format. Well it seems Microsoft wanted to nip this one in the bud and has issued an offical statement.

Microsoft firmly stands behind the HD-DVD format as the best choice for our consumers. As we've said before, we're confident that HD-DVD will bring the excitement of high definition movies to the consumer faster and at a greater value. We believe that consumers have signaled what format they want to enjoy high definition DVD and we're going to follow them down that path. The question of whether Xbox 360 has the flexibility to adapt to consumers' needs is a different issue entirely. Xbox 360 is a future-proofed system – one that allows us to add features as consumers demand them – as evidenced by our offering of the HD DVD drive as an accessory. Current reports indicating that we have a back-up plan, which includes Blu-Ray support are incorrect. At this point, we're fully committed to HD-DVD and have absolutely no plans to support other optical formats.

heh, ms ballsed up on the whole HD thing, if they had wiated to fit one as standard the 360 would have been dleayed ages coz there ain't and hd-dvd drives anywhere near production. I wonder whether they will release games on HD later on or just start shipping multiple DVD games cos sooner or later they r gonna start runnig out of space.

hence the expansion thing, but tbh that is a load of bs, paying extra because they couldnt be arsed to wait.

I would hope that an "add-on" HD drive for the 360 would have to be a fair amount cheaper than buying a separate drive. But it's not going to be, is it? So I'm happy to wait until the "wars" are in a more resolved state.

I doubt it will cost much for the addon drive, they'll still want to ship the 360 and if they move games to that format they'll have to sell the drive cheaply or people will just move console as they won't want to be forced into paying extra. I'm sure too that they will sell an updated 360 in a year or so with one built in though. Much like the slimeline PS2 etc
