Intel once tried to be different when it implemented Rambus in the first few revisions of the Pentium 4. Performance wise it was ok, had a Huge bandwidth (DDR has finally caught up!) but was hugely expensive, my first P4 rig had pc1066 rambus with 4.8gb/s bandwidth and that was a good few years ago.
AMD have signed a deal worth $75million with Rambus so could we see a rebirth of it in the PC market? so far SONY have been their only large outlet for useage in the PlayStation 2. Source Daily Tech
