Is the Movie Industry Stupid?  by Craig D at 22:16

More on a common theme today, Arstechnica are today commenting on news that movie ticket sales have declined yet again this year in the USA, the third year running.

Just as in a classic cyclical tragedy, movie theater operators have responded by raising costs. Fewer people come to the movies, and so tickets and concessions get more expensive. While numbers for 2005 are not yet in, in recent years the movie theater industry has managed to increase revenues despite dwindling numbers. This won't work forever, and there are signs that it is already failing.

But rest assured dear readers. Someone in Hollywood is already working on a press release that will blame much of this on piracy. It's this year's funniest comedy.

This is a favourite topic of conversation around here too, people just don't like paying to watch regurgitated crap.

They make some valid points about changing release strategies, but the movie industry is only barely more intelligent and forward looking thatn te record industry, so don't expect any changes any time soon. I suspect they'll continue to blame piracy for their decline for many years to come, in the mean time, forcing restrictive DRM on the digital home entertainment industry.

Very funny read, you do wonder how cinema's think so "rationally"
"oh oh, i know! Less people are coming the movies, so lets put up ticket prices! Yeah that will make more people come!"

Idiots! Ahh make a decent film tbh, Foreign films are normally much better now. A shame they are normally less well known though.

I went to the pictures the other day and paid £6.80 to watch a film called Harry Potter, then there was the drink and popcorn which came to about another £6.00.

And they wonder why people don't go anymore:- Too f**cking expensive.

Rent a dvd much easier

Completely blame the dull standard of hollywood films tbh. I mean its like all released in phases for a start, a string of Comic book conversions, a string of stupid teen romance flicks etc. Then the fact that every film seems to star the same tried and tested actors, are directed by the same old people (according to genre obviously) and lack any real creativity and/or originality from the basics of filming to plot and script.
Boring is my opinion.
oh yea and the costs of viewing in a cinema are a joke.
