Sony CEO Talks PS3  by Shane L at 09:10

Playstation
Howard Stringer, the CEO of Sony Corporation has recently conducted an interview where he talks about pricing and release dates.

Stringer commented directly on the pricing of the PlayStation 3 and its relation to Sony's Blu-ray next-gen optial disc strategy, stating: "S3 is a subsidized Blu-ray play that will sell 20 million units. The first HD player will be on the market for $1,000. PS3 could be at $300 or $400. Sony will be selling them at a loss the first six months to a year just to get Blu-ray players out in the market.

In addition, the Hollywood Reporter article cites specific dates for the release of the PlayStation 3, suggesting that the Japanese launch date of the PlayStation 3 will be March 2006, and the North American launch will happen in 'winter' of the same year. However, these facts do not come as a direct quotation from Stringer, meaning they may be open to interpretation,

I love the little disclaimer bit at the end, smells of bullshit perhaps? You can read the article over at Gamasutra

Blue-Ray CAN play DVD, or course it can.

However, SONY has bowed to rpessure from Movie studios and basically added a crap load of DRM and other over the top anti-piracy stuff, I doubt blue-ray DVD will ever be of any use in PC's becasue of it.

My advice is do NOT buy a blue-ray dvd player, boycott it like it's the plague or something.

Well i guess Maz is correct then, they'll have both lasers in the one drive (blue and red) but that give you two laser that can break.

Ok Lads , I see the nVidia 7800 GTX 512 being touted by the inquirer at $650 that's $1300 for SLI now guys even if the card retails for £400 over here that makes the mofo as expensive than a PS3 - Blue ray is only an issue if you don't buy genuine software & me thinks it will circumvent the silly ass Vista DRM issue with Monitors . So I dont see the issue with Blue -ray or the PS3 ... I must admit the Xbox 360 does look good also but only if you stick a HD on it, the cheapo one is not going to cut it without DH-DVD . I say keep your powder dry till the devices are launched & benchmarked . Hell the one which wins will be the one with the best games line up. Personally I only play FPS with a very small % of RTS games so I probably wont be in the market for a console unless I can get a decent FPS controler for it

DRM seriously effects you and everyone else, I'm ****ed if I'm gonna not make backups of all my dvd's, once your two year old decided she wants to put all her disk onher self, youll know why, with blue-ray I'll have to buy new Balamory disk every month, **** that.

Same with all her music, who are Sony or any ****er else to tell me what I can and can;t do with media I purchase and use legally.

Sony are basically saying: **** you mr consumer we're gonna bleed you for every drop we can get. DRM is fundamentally stpuid and restrictive to honest consumers. The onl thing they will stop is casual copiers, but we all know the real problem is online downloaded content. That they will never stop with DRM, morons. The only thing they will do is piss off the average consumer like me. I won't be touching anything blue-ray

Mani, imo it will bearly stop the casual copiers.. even know their are fully legal ways to bypass DRM protection (provided its obtained legaly)

i say let blue ray come.. i give it two weeks max before some smartarse figures a way to totaly bypass the security and run 1:1 copies off using a desktop pc

Its mainly the principal of having to replace some vvv expensive equipment to use the format

and also theirs the "no backup" side of it.. because of its encryption

the size's and speed of the disks is awesome but its mainly Cost and the Over Cautious security which is likely to cause more problems than its worth

Why would you want to back up your disks?, I have never had a game go faulty on a ps1/2, and replacing some vv expensive equipment? wtf is being replaced?

Right I have read into it a bit more now and cant see much of a fuss, if you want blu ray then get it, if not stick with your DVD.

We had this problem 10 years ago when dvd went main stream and everybody moaned about ther vhs collection, you can still get vhs now...

storm in a tea cup imo.

Shane the problem is also that many companies have stated they will be releasing their future releases on blu-ray format only... Waner Brothers for starters. and several PC game manufacturers are quite sure to follow along with the film industry... so its gonna be get Blu-Ray or dont get the next generation games/films

It's basicaly the beta vs VHS all over again,

Blu-ray vs HD-DVD, the companies dont want you to make back-ups because only like 1 in 100 ppl keep them as back-ups the reast end up in a doggy market store.

well if u think it's gonna b beta vs vhs, u really think sony are gonna lose this time? they will have learn't from their mistakes. as for DRM, it's more than just encryption, it's all hardware based now. **** knows how u will get round it i guess by chipping the console like you would today. I'm not for drm, but when it comes to consoles all my games r legit and i'd hardly use a ps3 as my main film player. tbh we should b more worried about Vista, if the DRM i have heard gets put into that we r all doomed (or just boycott the os), such examples as ur monitor being disabled by ur pc if the film doesn't have the correct drm, ur sound card being disables cao ur mp3 doesn't have the right drm. i use my pc a hell of a ot more than my consoles so drm will affect my life there alot more.

I know where Mani is coming from on the DVD backing up as I have young kids who do damage media. I just don't think it will be an issue for me for some time. The media Co's will take years to move people from DVD to HD media & the only peeps who will be impacted in the early years will be the early adopters who have big HDTV's. I will stick with legacy kit, as even a DVD looks the biz on HDTV.
Bottom line is that what I have in place will remain in place until the HD media wars are over & by that time I can guarantee that there will be a way of backing up my legally purchased software / film / music. The Yanks will demand it as a constitutional right. As for games / software being limited to HD formats well that cant happen until there is sufficient adoption … it will kill sales .
