Doom3 and 512mb Graphics cards  by Craig D at 01:28

PC
Yet more doom3, bored yet? You soon will be.

Still, some interesting bits on info in this .plan update by Robert Duffy at iD software discussing graphics quality in doom3 on different levels of hardware.
In Ultra quality, we load each texture; diffuse, specular, normal map at full resolution with no compression. In a typical DOOM 3 level, this can hover around a whopping 500MB of texture data.

So, doom3 already supports 512mb graphics cards. Crazy amount of ram when you think about it, my 1st PC had less than 1mb of main system ram.

It also begs the question, how long before systems generally have more gfx memory than system memory?

Would expect them to go hand in hand, games need the system ram too. Even UT2k4 benefits from a gig of ram so expect doom3 would will make full use of that and possibly more if you are in high detail.

Hmmm, so begs the question, what should I update next. GFX cards are too expensive, my 9800pro should do me. So it's 100 quid for an extra 512Mb of 3500 to make it dual channel Gig. Or upgrading cpu from 2800+ running at 166 to a 3200+ running at 200. Decisions...

9800 will be fine for a while, should run the next gen games fine.. upgrading from xp2800+ might make a small difference but probably worth holding off till faster chips are out so you can make a bigger step than just 400mhz. So that leaves RAM, going to a gig, especially if you dont have dual channel at the moment is probably worth it. Depends on ram costs at the moment, cant say ive looked.

Oh ****, I can't see my Corsair XMS 3500 on the usual sites. Looks like they've stopped selling it, which ****s me over a treat. I wanted a matched pair

Not sure how important that is, its certainly preferred, maybe just being the same brand is enough.

Yer I could prolly put XMS3700 in their but I'd rather keep it uniform.
