Battlefield 2 Demo Review  by James W at 14:32

FiringSquad have a nice writeup on the Battlefield 2 demo that was recently released.

First, let's get the bad out of the way:

The most obvious reminder that this is a DICE game are the strange bugs and even stranger interface. Who presses 'j' to talk? How come going prone is a toggle but the crouch key must be held down? Why must keys be unbound before they can be re-bound as something else? Why does the game tell me that the left Alt key is bound when it isn't? Someone explain to me why I must select a kit, select a spawn point and choose "done", rather than simply selecting a kit and double-clicking a spawn point, or picking the spawn point and double-clicking the kit? Didn't our favorite Swedish shooter developers get the memo about the interface last time around? Bueller? Lumberg? Anyone?

All of the above is true, but is really just superficial.

I abolutley love it, which makes the fact that I can't keep it running for longer than 10 minutes even more painful

yeah that sucks, I really hope they dont have to delay updates for too long as EA approves everything

I think the keybinding issue annoying, in fact I found it annoying in BF1942 also, and was surprised that it was still present in BF2.

Any tester will half a brain should be picking things like this up, especially when its been around for 3 games now.

Luckily though the game itself has only locked up once, and that was in the equally annoying game menu.

Most of that review rings true and as mork said the ingame server browser is appaling, still an awesome game that im loving - when i get time

the only thing that you guys want to comment on is the menu? it is annoying, but it's just trivial to figure out how to use it. WHO CARES? Don't you have any comments about the physics engine, and how realistic the movement feels? or how cool the soldiers animations look? or just the overall incredible graphic quality? How bout just stop bitching and enjoy the best game to ever be released.
morkith judges a game by how many times it locks up. BTW... it has NEVER locked up on me and i've played the crap out of it.

Don't you think 'best game to ever be released' is a bit extreme? It's most likley the 'best FPS game that has vehicles' ever though.

And jsut because it has never locked up for you, doesn't mean it hasn't for others. I traced my issues to RAM timings btw, it's very stable now.

But the in game browser IS poop and the keys ARE a bitch to bind. BF2 is NOT perfect, great fun it surely is.
