AGEIA Technologies Interview  by Scott H at 16:19

PC
Further to our previous news regarding this upcoming piece of hardware teamxbox have quite an in depth interview with the CEO and Chairman of AGEIA, Manju Hegde. The interview covers the PhysX chip and the NovodeX Physics SDK.

PhysX accelerates physics-related calculations in games. Its unprecedented power to perform advanced real-time physics simulation enables deeper player-environment interaction and immersive, living detail.

With the PPU, car fenders will at last crumple with satisfying detail, as the gamer slides his car head-on into a wall, thick with clouds of dust, curls of smoke and shards of glass one expects from being so close to the action.

It also mentions in the interview that we might have some of this kit in our Christmas stockings this year.

I'm not sure I understand their example of a crushed fender. I get how the physics hardware comes up with the geometry for the dents, but the graphics card still has to display the large number of polygons to get the bashes and dents looking right...so is it really going to help?
