Sony Patents   by Ben A at 11:10

Sony are going to enslave us all...

Sony Consumer Electronics has patented what, to all intents and purposes, is a real-life version of The Matrix, The New Scientist will report on Saturday, with the company seeking exclusivity rights on direct-to-brain feedback.

The objective stated by Sony is to enable movie-goers and game players to experience sensations such as touch and smell during movie and interactive entertainment experiences, though no specific application was outlined.

Unfortunately, we'll not all be having cool cyberpunk inlets installed in the back of our skulls, with Sony saving us from surgery and opting for a device that transmits ultrasound pulses into the brain that will modify neuron patterns in selected areas. Sounds great. Like a Virtual Boy. Just miles worse.

Head of Sony PR stateside, Elizabeth Boukis, said the work was a "rophetic invention" that "…was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

Hmm sounds a bit too Sci-Fi for my liking. I was just thinking how easy it would be to manipulate this into something rather sinister. Well obviously there are lots of pro's/con's, I think it's a bit far fetched myself.
