Virtual sword, real stabbing.  by Craig D at 12:59

PC
Saw this on The Register, it really is quite scary in a lot of ways and also raises a lot of questions

A Shanghai man stabbed to death a fellow online gamer who sold a virtual sword they had jointly won while playing "Legend of Mir 3", Reuters reports.

Qiu Chengwei, 41, repeatedly stabbed Zhu Caoyuan after discovering that Zhu had sold the "dragon sabre" for 7,200 yuan (£464).

Is it a game anymore when people take it this seriously? Are virtual belongings that have value no longer virtual? Or, as is more likely, is it that some people are just nuts.

Selling mmorpg items for real money has been going on for years, plenty of people are willing to pay real money for such artifacts.

These days you get people playing the game for most of the day, and then selling the items at various auction sites, lets just say this is an alternative pro gaming scene for a lot of people, and they probably make a lot more than the average cs player does.

Although id be pretty annoyed if someone pocketed £400 or so from an item that was half mine, stabbing him to death is a little over the top, he should have turned him into a frog instead.
