I see saving private ryan got number 1.

Anybody dispute this ?, tbh i thought great escape would of been #1

Band of Brothers although a series was top notch.

and i think ryan would of voted for pearl harbour as he told me so last night on irc.

hehe it's kind of funny that the real extraction mission that SPR was based on took them all of like 30 mins.
Go in, 'You Ryan?' 'Yup.' 'Ok, let's go'. End of film...
Guess it IS Hollywank though.

For me... geez... Having been in the situations to an extent, I found We Were Warriors to have the most authentic feel to it.
I enjoyed the Thin Red Line, mainly for the emotive focus other than the typical edge of seatedness of most Warries.
Band of Brothers has to be the best production I've seen I reckons. Can watch those DVDs every other week.

Secondary Topic

Was thinking today when watching the Call of Duty 2 videos how.. disturbingly real shooters are starting to get. The footage for CoD 2 moves beyond the semi emotive, easily recognisable as a computer game graphics of pretty much all shooters so far, and is displaying things in a whole new light.
Half Life 2 is amazingly realistic, but as it's prettymuch Sci-fi in content, it escapes that everyday lifeness that a WW shooter has.
CoD 2 on the other hand, we've all seen the above mentioned movies, and we all know it happened, and that it must have been hell.

What's everyone's opinions on games getting so realistic in graphics, AI and movement that it looks as much like real life as watching a movie? Or moreso, actually being there.

Question for the day:
"Is it a good thing, bad thing, or neither (don't give a rat's), that FPS games are getting to the point of mimicing real life?"

Good question really.

In my own personal opinion I think its great, the more authentic the better.

And yes I think if I was ever invloved in a WW2 scenario id be the lil gimp whimpering behind a cow not moving.

And what was the average age again?

hehe naw. West coast of Oz here, so is near 2am.
Me = Night Owl.

I guess I didn't really give my opinion on my question. Don't want it? Stiff schit!

... Playing BF2, which is a LOT closer to what I have experienced than CoD2 etc, there are times when I have the headphones on and I will just listen.
You can tell when there are a bunch of military people playing, because the machine guns are firing in spurts, not automatic, and the rifles are being used on single fire.
And hearing that hypnotic pulsing of rapid burst automatic, shouts from soldiers etc... it is such a strong.. erg what's the word... it sends you back into the environment in a major way. Not necessarily in a bad way, at all, for me. But I do wonder about a US soldier with Gulf War (1 or 2) Syndrom walking in on someone playing BF2, what their reaction might be.

Sitting here thinking about it, I have to admit I think the major realism is a good thing. Anything that can shock the living shit out of a 15 yo kid, convincing him that war is complete crap and should be avoided at all costs, is a good thing.
And the Parents Campaigning To Raise Our Children In A Bombshelters type organisation's opinions that realstic games make us violet etc is way too broad.

Video games = scapegoats.

I don't know about you, but after I play BF2, I don't feel the urge to go down to the corner store and buy an M16A2 (you can do that in the US right? ), then procede to riddle the people on the main street full of lead.
I think anyone who could go through with something like that is seriously f**ked up to begin with.

Did the game contribute to his/her actions? Possibly. But is blaiming the games, and not the extremely screwed up cultural environment we live through every day, fair?
Hell no!

But then I don't live in a country where I can get a rifle with a new bank account...

Hmmm... BAN GAMES IN THE USA!

Depending on what type of mood im in BF2 is great, sometime the buggy browser or the random crashed drives me mad.

Playing alone is only fun for a while, in squads with friends is where its at.
Yesterday we had four of us in a chopper, 1 medic and 1 engineer and 2 gunners, we top the score charts for the whole match, was the most fun I have had in a while.

As for blaming games for murders ect, psychologists allways like to lay the blame somewhere, allways games that gets the blame now, 15 years ago it was films, 30 years ago it was books.

Whats next my mobile phone (cell phone) made me do it

Glad I live in the UK, even though right now its raining

i must agrea with the comment about the real spr mission as we Re-enactors all piss ourselfs laughing at the little details that are way wrong...

and the fact that all the games/films are based from an american POV (i.e. built around the American reports for missions...) in truth the yanks only saw about 50 tigers... and there wasnt a single one in most of the places they claimed there was... most of the tanks they encountered were Stugs, which the yanks and brits thought was a tiger.. because it looked totaly diffrent but only a few people had seen a tiger to start with.. and all the Axis tanks did look the same... well big and squarish...

and having researched a lot to do with the dday landings.. only BoB truly has the authenticity that other modern films aim for... being that there are less inconsistencys per hour of footage in BoB than there are in any other film cenred around dday...

the most accureat for uniforms etc.. are the Where Eagles Dare and The Eagle Has Landed which are both based around the Falschrimjager and use correct kit and protocol... and they are two of the very few films which follow the Axis side of things... although they are not accualy events that "happened" to any of my knowlage.. they certainly have the most truth to detail in them.

I've always thought they should make a modern film about WW2 based from the Axis side, i think it would be an amazing and interesting film to watch.

lol band of bolocks was mainly baised on false presumtions of the guys they interviewed...
its only good because it shows historical accuracy in the uniforms and other stuff like that... the FJ didnt lose Neuville that easy lol it took the yanks 14days! not 15mins!

plus the tigers you see WERE not realy tigers ... as i stated before the yanks thought almost all the german tanks they saw were tigers.. but if you look at the german military documents you can clearly see that NO tigers were ever used by the division's in the areas the 101'st passed through .... granted there were tanks but not tigers.. mainly panthers and stug's maby the odd pak 38 or 34

im damned certain not a single yank saw one of these unless it had been blown shitless by the guys defending the factorys (no maus's survived the war as they were destroyed so the allies couldent capture them!)
http://www.tankmuseum.ru/images/pav6-9.jpg < maus heavy tank... not even the Flak88 could damage its armour! (please note that the small barrel is the same size and length of those shown on the Sherman!!! the longer barrel is about twice as wide as a flak88's barrel and almost 1 and a 1/2 times longer)
its not a small toy

but BoB is alright i guess.. its a damnd site better than SPR and most other WWII films/series

im just waiting for the chance to make a film about monty casino from FJR9's point of view... and proabbly do another half for the brits point of view! hehe

as for Der Untergang ITs not a war film its political.... baised on the last days of the nazi party from the perspective of hitlers personal secretary. it coveres the fall of berlin and the death of those senior members of the nazi party within the "Untergang" or Bunker as we know it
