Ok I have just switched to bt adsl from ntl cable, on cable my router worked fine for nathan and myself.
Now im on adsl the modem i have is a usb modem so obviously i have 2 choices.
1. a usb router, so any ideas on which ones and what types ?
or
2. ICS, with ics what i want to know is, if i have a firewall and av set up on my pc will it cover nathan aswell ?, or would he need to have his own firewall and av ?
any other ideas or tips would be appreciated.

OR ADSL router than uses lan internally, personally this would be my choice. Quick search on scan found:
LN6559 Dynamode All In One ADSL Router + ADSL Modem + 4Port Switch + VPN £38.19
LN5488 Origo All In One ADSL Router + ADSL Modem + 4Port Switch + VPN £37.54

I'd go for netgear or D-Link personally. But a router is definitely the best bet. Most of em come with built in hardware firewalls, backed up with a software firewall on the machines they are very secure.

I tried ics last night but it didnt like it, so anymore ideas would good.

I thought all adsl routers had usb connections, or just double check the spec mentions usb. What didnt you like about ICS? its quite good, though I wouldnt recommend it over a hardware router.. especially for a usb device as you get a small cpu over head

Nope, the adsl router (in most cases) is the adsl modem and it has 4 lan ports, you plug lan connections into it, and it into the adsl socket.
Most of them have an internal web server for management.

So I wouldnt use the modem that came with it but just the router then ? and I plug the telephone extension wire into the router and then the obvious lan connections into various PC's as per norm ? Sound thick i know but ill allways maintain im tech shy

Yes m8, that's exactly how ours here at work does its thang.
Those 2 routers from scan that I pasted in further up this thread are the same.
adsl modem + 4 port switch + firewall + vpn

I got confused because with NTL you plugged there modem into the router then the lan connections.
Think ill order one of them from scan as that aint a bad price.

somone is getting confused *points to felon* all u need mate is plug ur computer into modem and modem goes into the internet as you allready know ! now all u need is a ethernet card in each computer !! and a cross over cable RJ45 is the real name for it i think. anyway now all u do is plus one end of the cable in naths computer and one end in your computer felon . then go through networking wizard on ur computer felon then do it on naths. may take a couple of reboots and a couple or more time doing the wizard but u will get it working. then Walla !!! both computers on internet both can play CoD ! if u want more computers on network put some more PCI network cards in ur computer and hook anoughter RJ45 cable from ur computer to a third one .!! and bridge ur conections in the wizard ! so easy to do !! and u dont got to waste loads of money on fancy routers !!!

Felon mate, for cable it's Cable Modem --> Router. Unlike ADSL u can't cut out the modem even if you buy a Modem/Router
