If you only want to have 1 gfx card and aren't into major overclocking then you might want to consider an Nforce 650i, depends on budget. If you have few more £'s then think about a 680i/780i an stick with ddr2 ram for now. ddr3 is still too expensive.

Possibles..

If you just want the one gfx card then intel chips mobo imo. P5K I think it is.

the new intel chipsets are optimized for DDR3 though scrappy, they don't run so great with DDR2

hello,

got the pc all sorted, got it all connected up, turned it on and after about 10/15 sec the power just cuts dead, is that the psu or is it something more serious?

To me it sounds like you ain't got something connected properly like the cpu fan or heatsink.

Do you get any beeps while booting ?

Have you connected BOTH power inputs to your g card ?

Have you made sure your ram is in matching slots ?

Is everything connected to the mobo properly ?

If nothing else works what I suggest is to remove everything bar the basics and see if it happens then, then add one item at a time untill you find what the problem is.
