Would like some ideas on this build. (my pc died a week or two back and its so fecking old its pointless to resurect it.)

My budget is £900 but im already over by a small amount (i have some of the stuff already so i managed to save about £200 (raptors and existing periphrials))

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3
Asus P5K Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-E
4GB GEIL PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra (2x(2x1GB) Duel Chan kits)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Noctua NH-U12F CPU Cooler (this thing has reviews around that are just amazing. its easily comparible to watercooling - give or take 2-3degrees.)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache (+ my two 76GB Raptors.)
Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 PSU

comes to about 870 + postage (and anything ive missed out like artic silver paste)

Bit of case modding (to fit the 8800GTX and a 120mm top exhaust fan), some of my existing stuff, vista, monitor, DVD R/w and some cooling stuff (directional spot fans and HDD coolers.)

I know the memory is going to be a bit of a bottle neck (can clock to 900mhz at 4-4-4-12 without cooling problems) but i dont think its going to pose a problem for quite some time.

Im looking to clock the CPU to 3.2GHZ (people have been reaching 3.4ghz on air with worse setups so it shouldent be a problem)

the only other downside is that its a X-fire mobo but it seems pointless to go SLI with such a powerful card.

just on a side note i may have a (BSG 7600GS OC 512DDR2 AGP card up for grabs but i have to wait and see what my dad's doing with his rig first)

Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.

if you're going to get 4gb of ram, get Vista 64.

If you'd rather not have the hassle, go with 3gb (2x1gb and 2x512mb) or even just 2gb

Not to mention how many issues there are even getting 4 gig of ram to work in 99 percent of mobos, and if you are planning in overclocking then 4 gig will slow that oc down.

im looking to clock to 3.4ghz on air which having read a fair bit about this isnt going to be much trouble. (some crazy fool hit 3780.9mhz stable on air)

the ram shouldent be a problem though as im only looking at a 1:1 clock at about 9x400mhz

Forget about overclocking it for a while, get it 100% stable 1st. And be careful, mine ran fine at 3.4ghz but it crashed after a few days and took 3 of 6 the SATA with it.

was going to run it stock for a week
then up the fsb to 400 on stepping 8 (1:1 ratio)
then take it up by 25fsb every two weeks until i get stability problems and then clock it down to the last stable settings

hoping to get 450x8 as a final clock (unless is uber cool and stable at this for a few months) but i may go for 400x9 instead.

Not overclocked Intels before so it should be fun To be honest, 3 Gig I'm more than happy with. Anything over that is a bonus. This Athlon 64 x2 3800+ is shite. Can't wait to get this Intel rig up.

God dammit, looking at my invoice I didn't realize I had ordered 4Gig. I thought I'd got 2. Is this gonna **** me up on XP or will it just not use all of it? I plan to get Vista prob when I get my GFX card.

It will use between 3.2 and 4gb but might be a bit unstable in XP or Vista 32, you'll need Vista 64 to use all 4gb.

Well I've got my bits. That was prob the smoothest build I've done so far. Usually somethings plugged in wrong.
All running with a nice easy OC of 3.2Gig running @60c under load on air. Very impressed so far. Just need the new gfx card now.

i tweeked my buid a bit for better cooling (i.e. slightly different case and a cpu cooler lapping kit) but im fairley confided that when all's said and done im going to be hitting 3.2GHz at around 40C

im going straight for Vista Ultimate 64 =D but then im ordering my build with a 8800GTX.

My rig did not loose any O/C stability moving from 2 to 4 Gig of RAM Ryan but having said that it is a good make using a good chipset.

Nope, same animal, it's just not anywhere near as bad as some would have you believe.

Drivers are coming along nicely now, speed wise it's the same as XP these days in gaming.

Its as fast as xp, stable, quicker when extracting large rar files. Control alt delete works a charm unlike xp. I have not had a single driver problem hell even my xfi drivers seem to work fine, and creative drivers on any OS requires more luck than the cs netcode and the lottery combined.
Although that might be a whole other ball game if you run 64 bit vista. Also I don't have any no name hardware or small makes that would have trouble with drivers, all my kit is from well known companies.
Oh and spit have you gone from two sticks of ram to four, as that tends to affect overclocking, or at least use too.

I would add that i t was crap when it first launched but it's not now. The recent updates and newer drivers have fixed it up a treat.
