So I've heard lots of waffle about the 360 vertical or horizontal. Can anyone actually tell me if there's a recommended position, or one which is more likely to bust DVD drive/overheat the console than another.

i must admit ive heard both are ok
i have mine on its side on top of my dvd player so its easier to swap the ethernet cable around, and i have no problems with overheating etc

I keep mine upright. Better air flow.
The 360 that died was kept flat... but anyone who tells you one is better then the other; give them a swift kick to the head.

Mines was flat but has been upright last few days to see if it was any quieter, I think it is marginally.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

I think MS will be shrinking the fabrication of the cpu's down to 65nm next year - so less power run it meaning less heat and fan noise.
