One of my friends had his PC stolen in a burglary this week & he lost six years worth of music, video & most importantly pictures. He had backed most of the stuff up on DVD but the mofo's simply pilled all of his DVD & CD collection into a suite case so that went as well . This made me re think my back up strategy (I was relying upon the fact that with two PC's the likely hood of a thief nicking both in one sitting would be quite slim ). Having weighed up the pros & cons of simply ensuring all my data is backed up to an external HDD I thought , blow it get my self a NAS box & address back-up & other practical needs such as sharing large pictures & files with friends & family via a simple to use interface. Oh the little beauty can be set-up to down load files from other sites during off peak times where my bandwidth allowance remains untouched & without the need for a PC !!! Anyway I got it from Scan for just over £153... The Beast

NAS = Network Attached Storage & the little git will be sitting under a desk & so will hopefully look like its a modem or router. At holiday time though the bugger will be in the safe or relocated to a safer location. I might even nab a 125 Mbs wireless router & place the device in another part of the house so its not viewed as anything useful.

What about an online service for doing this sort of thing?
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Good point Mani but I just dont trust 3rd parties with my data & my lowly DSL connectivity is not viable as a backup transport.
