I just got my new SATA drive, hooked it all up and booted into windows.

Windows has assigned the drive a letter because it's shifted my DVD Drive up one letter to 'G' but I can't see the new SATA Drive.

The new Drive won't show up in Device manager or drive management either. Device manager is showing a 'code10' error on my VIA SATA RAID CONTROLLER as well.

I'm not using the SATA as a primary drive as I have 2x IDE drives already with windows installed etc.

I've also installed the SATA drivers etc, I can't find out where to see the drive in my bios though.

I had the same problem when I installed SATA drives, I used Partition Magic to detect and format them and had no probs since.

ok in my manual for my motherboard there is a section describing the components, it mentions :

Promise 20378 On-board (optional)
Supports 2 serial ATA plus 1 ATA133
RAID 0, RAID 1 or RAID 0+1 is supported
RAID function work w/ATA133+SATA H/D or 2SATA H/D
Connect up to 2 SATA device and 2 ATA 133 devices

It shows a picture of the connections in the manual but my motherboard doesn't have those.

Also in the bios section of the manual it says to go to "Intergrated Peripherals" and then "On-board PCI Controller" and there is an option to change :

Lan Controller
1394 Controller
P20378 S.ATA Controller
AC'97 Audio

My bios only has :
AC'97 Audio
Lan Controller

Is the SATA controller an added extra in a pci slot or something ?

Right, if I remove the SATA drive then I lose the errors in Device Manager and it's all good. So either the drive is faulty or there's something else i'm missing. Any ideas ?

more updateorage, I've just found that ebuyer sent me the SATA2 drive instead of the SATA1 version, is this what's causing all this ?

Do SATA2 drives slow down to SATA1 speeds and still work or is it totally different ?

I have a feeling my drive will be going back
