hey all

i got my new mobo but it turns out i have a bad stick of ram (i know i soulnt of fixed it with a hang over )

so i need some more

i was thinking of the Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 linky

i want 2x1gb of duel channel but dont know whats what in the ram world, i have a Av8-3rd Eye mobo with ddr (not ddr2) any advice on good ram would be appresated, dont want to spend over £200

I basicaly dont know the diffrence between CAS2 and CAS3 and whats good and bad ram and whats the diffrence between Single Rank and Double Rank?

that ram seems fine to me
cas is the time it takes the ram to empty its self from of the data stored in it last cycle as it does this thousands of times a second it really effects performance
there is 2.5 CAS also which is pretty good stuff just avoid CAS3 as this is value cheap stuff unless it is cheap

single and double is .. single, the black chips are only on one side of the green board
this uses bigger actual chips and is better quality,
double, where the chips are on both sides of the board uses cheaper smaller modules and the memory controller sees them as a stick each side (2 sticks ) whilst they are only 1 stick in real life. This is the reason i was saying only get 2 sticks of ram even as they will probably be double sided
if your only gonna get 2x 1gb this wont be a problem but 4 x 512 sticks double sided would be too much for the memory controller as it sees 8 sticks and will only run 8 at 333mhz

overall i wouldnt spentd that much on ram as the difference between the cheapest and the dearest isnt that much compared to any other part of your PC ony if your over clocking will it make a noticible difference.

get fast SATA HDD's this will get you in the server quicker so u can pick your vehicle and cheaper ram

Crucial Ballistix is very good - I run Corsair XMS3200LL ( CAS2 ) & Balistix 3200 (CAS 2 also ) the Ballistixs over clocks far better & if you read up on the stuff it's rated by many ... best thing about it though is its cheap I bought 4x512 for £125 from Dabs & its been sitting at 265 MHZ on super tight timing no probs on standard voltage . Now Sent is right about the memory controler if your not running a Venice , San Diago or X2 core on your A64 your going to have to go down the 2x1Gig path & if you want to squeeze T1 command out of your ram then again even with the latest revision cores you cant do it with 4 DIMM's you got to go Big Bore Ram modules

I brought 2 x 1gb Ballistix and I practically get in the server first.. or near enough to guarantee a plane every map start )

That's with my shitty IDE harddrives and A64 3000

Best upgrade I could have done for now.. does everything I wanted for £190.
