Q: If i got HL2 ep1 what would it be expanding?
A: NOTHING

if you dont need the original than its not an expansion. face it you got riped off for the same game!, it would be like EA saying "well 2142 follows on from BF2, so its technicaly an expansion"

Expansion.

It expands on the HL2 story. It is NOT a stand alone game.

Valve also said it was more of an expansion anyway, hence pricing it so low.

So using your logic.

HL2 was an expansion of HL
Tomb raider 2,3,4,100 were expansions of Tombraider
Doom 2,3 were expansions of Doom
Mario 2,3,4,64 were expansions or Mario Bros
Zelda 2,3,4,64 were expansions of Ledegnd of zelda
Sonic 2,3,4,etc were expansions of Sonic
MegaMan 2,3,4 were expansions on MegaMan
Quake 2,3 were expansions on Quake
House of the dead 2,3 were expansions on HOTD

Should I go on?

Most if not all of the above have the same storylines, and continue from or tell the next story in the saga of the original.

OK, I'll admit when im wrong.

from wikipedia

Some expansion packs do not require the original game in order to use the new content, as is the case with Blue Shift for Half-Life or Rainbow Six: Covert Operations Essentials for Rainbow Six. This type of expansion pack is often termed a "stand-alone expansion pack".

No you're being too literal.

Valve said it was more of an expansion, hence not pricing it as a full fledged game.

My logic would be

HL = Game
HL2 = Sequal
HL2:ep2 = Expansion (the 'HL2:' part giving away that fact that it is indeed an expasion to HL2)

Doom = game
Doom 2 = game
Doom 3 = Game
Doom 3: reserrection of evil = Expasion (says so on the box but it doesn't require Doom 3 to be played).

It's quite simple

The only Battlefield product i own is Battlefield 2. I own none of the boosters, which imo are content that could be free and not segregate the user base. I've no problems with games being similar etc at ALL.

But this game is the same engine, and to my eyes incorporates the same UI/scopes/gameplay and will once again segregate the user base further. It'll be split between 2142 clans and BF2 ones further killing the scene, when BF2 is barely a year old.

I'm not trying to stop you playing it but voicing my opinion, if you lot are going to get upset about it, tough nappies!

Your dead right about it killing the scene , I'm hopping all the nuggets leave and play 2142 and leave BF2 to us

I never played BF1942 so i dont know what the UI looked like, but i guess they kept it the same beause the BF2 croud know how to use it.

I think we all know why its been release and that EA are money grabing @@@@@@@@ers

/me looks at the EA Sports range.

and I dont mind it having the same engine as BF2, as there are countless games out there with the HL/Doom engine.

That's the whole reason me (and probably the others) aren't buying 2142. No matter how good it is they'll only go and release more boosters for that too and kill off the community again before it's even established.

There is no boosters for WoW yet. Besides comparing those 2 games is stupid. One is an mmorpg where they listen to the community and update the game how players want it. The other is a free game to play online where they **** the community over and wipe it nearly out

They could easily have given stuff away free for BF2 .. Valve did updates and stuff for years after halflifes release (and still do) and they don't charge you £9 for 3 new maps and a couple of skins each time do they.

Many other companies support their game and community after its initial release. Like you said EA are just cash hungry and milking everyone for as much as they can and most if it doesn't even benefit the players in any way as a whole.

I bet they already have loads of ideas for BF:2142 but are refraining from putting them into the actual game because they've seen that people are willing to pay for mini-expansions for BF2 so they'll just leave those ideas so they can charge you even more for a couple of extra maps or gametypes again.

I wasnt comparing wow to bf2, wow is for whores

I just wanted to know how they handaled new content, but at £10+ a month i guess its going to be free anyway.

probably the bigest driving force behind 2142 was EAs acuasition (sorry about the spelling ) of Dice, they need to make soem of the cash back to show it was a good move, and milking a popula product is an easy rought to take.

WoW is £8.99 a month btw

Put it this way, say they had supported bf2 properly and encouraged and helped the modding commmunity like it was with BF1942. Then they could have had another DC mod on their hands which would have brought more people to the game (I know me and a few friends only brought BF1942 for the DC mod alone)

Then they could have taken the mod makers onboard and stolen their ideas like they did with the DC team before sacking them.

See !! they only screwed over the DC team and still sold extra games, I should work for EA

The new wow content from (burning crusade) will be avaliable for all the players although only people who buy the addon game will be able to go to the new areas/ play the new races

So in effect its like SF,EF and AF for BF2

everyone can use the new weps if they pick them up [or buy them in auction house in the case of wow]
but only people who have the expansion can play the new levels etc

Now.... Midnight if bf2 is so bad why have you speny 850 hours playing it ? you make out like its a terrible game that nobody should play. The latest patch has crashing issues but has barely affected the gameplay which you have spent so much time playing. Lets see some of ur proof that its a dead community ?

Some of you whine on about the lack of mods/support then moan about booster packs splitting the community.... what do you think mods do. When booster packs come around 9 months after the game is out and only cost £5 whats the problem, at least they are trying to keep the game fresh. When have they kept ideas back for booster packs ?? they havent done this so far so why are they suddenly expected to start.

Why is it everyone seems to use it as a negative that its based on the bf2 engine, if its so bad why did you all buy bf2 and spend so much time playing it.

The booster packs HAVE split the community, that fact is undeniable, what is also undeniable is the game has changed for the worse in many ways.

It's stil fun tho, but it's clear EA would rather release more expansions and add-ons that cost money than encourage a large community like Valve, pity.

Seph, those hours were BEFORE the patches all messed it up so that kind of negates everything as it WAS a good game. Like Mani said, they've messed many things up.

I haven't played BF2 for a long time, nore any of the addons. The only thing I played was PRM since our last match, so you can tell how long that was.

When have they kept ideas back for booster packs ?

How about the littlebird, the A10 and the fact they charge you for those with a couple of maps instead - the missing gametypes they removed from bf1942 which have now made it into BF2142 instead. Etc.

Maz the difference is with the WoW thing you made, is that people are all still on the same server and can still interact as normal, where-as in BF2 you have to go on a new server to enjoy the maps, many of which weren't full for too long - at least in EF.

Indeed, I agree.

I quit BF2 a while ago (thank god), but I'm damn sure I would feel cheated if the game I brought was changed so much over time that it differed from the game I wanted to buy. I'd feel even more cheated if people I knew moved to another BF2 game when the game I was playing wasn't even out for a year. BF2 is still a pretty new game for people and alot of people are still getting to grips with it... it has so much life left but for some reason they wan't to kill it off already.
