It's how I imagine Space: Total War will eventually turn out like with its tongue firmly in its cheek: tactical, intriguing and absorbing - when you're a while into the game, but lacking a little polish. It's at its best when you've got a burgeoning empire and there are rebellions and trade federations to deal with at every end of it, rather than dealing with franchising out onto unknown planets in your first few turns.
