BioShock Review
If any message should come out of the success of BioShock, it's this: developers should never be afraid to be influenced by literature. Just as Deus Ex drew on real world myths and legends to push it's twisting tale from pillar to post, BioShock draws heavily from the excellent Atlas Shrugged - a novel by Ayn Rand about one man's struggle to keep his business running while society collapsed around him - mixing it with cinematic overtones and a whole new level of player freedom to incredible effect. This is the deepest game you'll play for a long while.

So many people have said good things about this game, I'm eager to try it. Only question is whether to get the 360 version or wait until I have my new PC

id wait for the new pc mate, this is easily one of the best games ive ever pld and it would be a shame to ruin it by playing at 20fps with a pad on the 360 (not to mention the likelihood the ever reliable 360 will crash every 10 mins cos it cant handle the game without overheating ) Everyone NEEDS to play this game though, without a doubt the best fps game ive ever pld and thats saying something with the likes of HL2 around. Must buy

Nice writeup, made a good read and I agree its a great game.

I went for the 360 version, it runs great and has never crashed Obi I chose it because it's on the 360 I can play on a sofa with a big plasma and get more engrossed.

Stem cells with the ability to mutate into anything and grant you great powers. The splicers in the game are all addicted to the stuff. You need it to fund buying new plasmids.

Completed it at the weekend, most over rated game of the year to me... still good though. Just not THAT good.

ur one of the lucky ones with a 360 that isnt broken then toma still wouldnt fancy playing it with a pad would totally ruin the experience for me, u just dont have anywhere near the same level of control u get with a mouse

Didn't say it was my first 360

I agree about the control with the pad but it's not a game where you need the accuracy of a mouse so much.

(360 version runs perfectly with a good framerate and very easy controls)

SPOILERS MAYBE

Some Bad Points:
The game felt very linear in places too, especially with its method of locking you in rooms for cutscenes, you really felt like you had no power over what happens.

Animations were pretty ropey and dire in places. Human characters moved quite strangly in places and some animations were used far too much. Some cutscenes were pretty horrid and I'm not sure what was wrong with the flying security bots looking like they were moving at 10 FPS while everything else was moving fine.

In whole, it felt like you were alone without any hope of seeing daylight or someone to interact with, which reminded me far too much of Doom 3. The story is all told over radio and tape messages that you pick up in most random places. That felt a little cheap and again, doom 3 to me. For me, it became quite repetative for me after a while, but I kept at it thinking the story would twist but

it never did. It was all quite predictable and lonely.

Before anyone thinks I'm being unfair, I enjoyed the game but for me it's no where near as good as people are saying it is. It does nothing new, most things are more evolution than revolutionary so I'm not quite sure why this is being rated (on average, not just here) like one of the best games ever made because it's really not.

Good review as always, cragtek. I just felt like I had to mention some things that most people ignore.

Shooters won't be revolutionary again until a proper follow-up to Deus Ex

SPOILER ALERT

I didn't notice any problems with character animations or the security bots myself. As for the storyline, I thought the twist re: Atlas was quite good and generally the whole thing flowed pretty well. I don't think linearity is necessarily a bad thing if the storyline justifies it.

I do agree regarding some aspects though. One bit in particular where you're at the mercy of a cut scene felt quite restrictive.

It's one of those games which is going to appeal to different people for different reasons. I thought it was great, but at the same time it's not impossible to see why others wouldn't like it so much.

i don't get it. it's really just another linear shooter. tell me WHAT is great? what haven't been here before? i just stopped playing a while after killing ryan... it just got to boring. like half life 2. not to mention the dreadful activation and the draconic copy protection.

I didn't like it either eNTi, it bored me to tears in less than an hour and I still haven't played it again since.

It was, still loved it though. Was a bit repetitive in places, and you have to follow the story and do lots of weapon upgrades to keep it interesting.
